Photography can be a beautiful thing, yet a frustrating endeavor at times. We have little to no control over our subjects and the light; going out requires an investment of time and most likely money; and yet, the odds are we will head head back home empty handed, with nothing to show for your efforts.
This art, like anything that is meaningful, requires time and patience. We have to practice every day, but we also must remember that results are far from guaranteed. In fact, making an image we will love for years to come is a rare event. After all, that's what makes it special, isn't it?
Developing long-term patience can be very frustrating. I've felt frustrated by the weather, location, gear, and my lack of motivation more times than I can count.
However, just like we can't expect to run a marathon without months of training -and even then, the race day will one of sweat and tears-, we shouldn't expect this lifelong journey to come easy.
We must understand that obstacles and frustrations are a natural part of the process. The only way to overcome these challenges is to push through them. This is what it takes to become a great photographer.
After all, if photography were easy, everyone would be doing it. It's precisely the difficulties that make it so rewarding.
Recently, I printed all the photographs I took last year, and I took quite a lot of them! The result was these two very thick volumes.
One thing you realize when looking at 12 months' worth of work, is that days blur into weeks, weeks blur into months. I've long forgotten the frustration I felt on one particular day; but the images I made back then, and the following days, are still here.
