Hello, everyone. It’s been a while! Lots of things have happened since we last had a talk.
One of the most exciting moments of the summer was when I was able to do a small reprint of my sold out book ONE. There are a few copies remaining (shipping to the US only), check it out here.
There are more things, but first, let’s talk about photography. Today, how to notice.
How to notice
To make good images, we have to see them first. To see them, we need to pay attention to what’s around us.
I find that carrying a camera with me at all times helps — because I’m alert, I’m looking for images to make. Even in familiar places and familiar situations. The autopilot mode is not in charge anymore.
It’s also important to be present. That means no podcasts, or conversations while photographing. Sadly, those things rob us of our attention and we might miss something. Music can be helpful if you are in a loud environment; if not, let the ambient sounds inspire you.
Take a photo as soon as possible, you’re establishing shot. Don’t wait until you are at the perfect location under the perfect conditions — that’s probably not going to happen. Instead, get those creative juices working as soon as possible, don’t worry about taking a bad photo, just take it; and open your mind to finding images where you hadn’t found them before.
Take on a project. It can be as simple as photographing the mailboxes in your neighborhood, or the fire hydrants while you go to work. What about the chimneys, or fence, or patterns on the sidewalk. By choosing one thing to look for, we will be more likely to find it, as opposed to be overwhelmed by the environment.
I have a whole video about this on my YouTube channel where I share many more tips on how to notice.
Life updates
Where to begin? Since the last newsletter, I went to the US; first the west coast, then Indiana. I took the California Zephyr! That was a cool experience.
But that feels like two lives ago now. I’m writing this while sitting in my car somewhere in Reinheimen Nasjonalpark, in Norway. I’ve been in Norway for more than a month now, living in my vehicle. An experience that will be hard to forget.
I have some videos from the road already, with many more to come soon. These are a couple of my favorites.
No images today, as doing this from my phone is hard. Computers are still so much better when it comes to being productive!
Anyway, I’ll try to be better about keeping you updated here. I promised to do so and failed. Hopefully it won’t happen again.
Thank you for reading.
Talk to you soon!
Adrian
