It’s been a minute!
I just got back from an incredible trip to Riaño, in the Picos de Europa mountains, where I had some of the best conditions for photography ever.
It was totally unexpected, but for two days, we experienced some strong “calima”. Calima is an atmospheric phenomenon in which dust and sand from the Sahara, in Africa, gets carried long distances by strong winds. It happens regularly in the Canary Islands and, sometimes, in mainland Spain; I had never seen it happening this far north, though. This was confirmed by the locals, who couldn’t believe it either.
The result? Some of the most breathtaking and eerie landscapes I have ever witnessed. I think the closest thing would be smoke from a wildfire; and like a wildfire, the air was pretty dangerous to breathe. I used a mask for the first couple of days of the trip, and I had to put off any of the hiking I was planning on doing. Fortunately, things cleared up for the second half of my trip, so I was able to climb to the top of Pico Gilbo, for some of the best views I had ever seen.
As you can see, I used the words “most” and “best” a few times already — that’s exactly how I felt during most of this trip. This what I live for, this is why I’m a photographer.
I hope I captured some of those feelings in my images and videos, and that you can see why I loved my time in Riaño so much.
