images only you can make
After visiting some of the most beautiful landscapes in the American West for the last 3 months, one would be forgiven for thinking I was less than excited to be back home, here in Indiana.
I used to think that way, too. I spent too much time looking at photographs from stunning and exotic places, wishing I was there to create those same photos. Thus, I kept waiting—waiting for that trip where I’d finally make the images I’d been wanting to make. I’d walk around with my camera every once in a while, but I never believed good work could be done right there, at home. I had to go somewhere.
It took me a while to understand -really understand- that there’s always an image to be created, no matter where we are. We just need to open our minds in order to see it.
I was living in Portland when I decided to become a full-time photographer. I’d spent years going to all the beautiful spots 3-4 hours away from the city, and dreaming about those that were further away. Then I decided to go a bit more local. Images started to show up everywhere. Saint John’s is probably the best example, as it is one of my favorite images I’ve ever made, right there, at home.
The Last of Winter is another of my all-time favorites -again, made right at home, this time here in Indiana.
This was last week’s main topic, as I published the video “Images only you can make” on YouTube where I share these thoughts. Along with many examples of images I’ve made over the years near where I was calling home at the time.
I’m sharing a few of those here in this email as well, check out the video if you haven’t yet and want to see the rest.

I hope you all are staying safe, healthy… and warm. It’s been pretty cold around here, some days with a high of 18F (-8C), which is not making outdoor photography very easy. If only we got some snow! Soon, I hope.
Anyway, I also hope you all say goodbye to this 2020 the way it deserves, and are ready to finally welcome 2021. I wish you all a Happy New Year!
Talk to you in the next one.
